This is a proposal process intended only for young adults (age 18-35) who are interested-in or already engaged in the UU Young Adults for Climate Justice network (any active member of the network can make a proposal). Proposed by: Aly Tharp (staff Programs Coordinator)
CONTEXT: UU Young Adults for Climate Justice is a community network of people aged 18-35, who are passionate about climate justice and connected to the Unitarian Universalist faith in some way. The network has approximately 400 people in a Facebook page, and a list-serv of 100 young adults --- plus a core-leadership team that is currently twelve people. Our mission is to grow a diverse network of Unitarian Universalist young adult activists grounded in faith, supported by each other and the UU community at large, and working together for climate justice. Our vision is that our individual and collective actions catalyze the movement for a socially just, resilient, and sustainable future.
I am interested in seeing the development of an "Artists Cohort" for UUYACJ for a number of reasons:
Art is a very important part of culture / being human, and a very powerful tool for social justice and cultural organizing.
There are already many talented artists within the UUYACJ. We could begin to build relationships and intentional community based around exploration and use of art for climate justice.
UUYACJ is increasingly delving into art and arts-activism in its organizing:
The network decided by consensus to have a logo design contest in the Spring of 2016, and the contest was launched in Summer 2016.
New plans are developing to do a lot of cultural organizing with visual and theatrical arts during 2017. It could be beneficial to have an established Artists Cohort, because (1) members of the cohort could support and participate in this cultural organizing, (2) the cohort and UUYACJ could grow significantly through engagement and recruitment throughout these upcoming activities, (3) the cohort could potentially take a leadership role in establishing community standards and processes for just and fair collaborations and commissionings for art creation to support UU climate justice movement building. This (#3) is something that I would greatly appreciate having support establishing, whether or not we create an artist cohort develops.
UUYACJ leadership is interested in having smaller, self-organized cohorts within our network, primarily (but not exclusively) regarding development of regional community groups. I feel that creating an Artists Cohort would be a positive step in the growth of the UUYACJ, as it would be our first community sub-group to develop.
PROPOSAL: that an "Artists Cohort" or "Artists Collective" be established, as an UUYACJ community sub-group for interested artists of all kinds. The cohort itself will establish the primary purposes and priorities of the cohort, as well as its methods and frequency of communication and organizing.
DECISION PROCESS: usually, UUYACJ decisions of this level of significance are decided by consensus, with UUYACJ's core-leadership team being the only ones having ability to "block" proposals. This does feel like something that should be decided by our usual consensus process --- why should the whole group have control over whether or not identity/affinity sub-groups establish?
As such, I bring this proposal forward because I am interested in establishing community among artists with the UUYACJ. I invite anyone who is interested in establishing a cohort (for people of shared geography, identity, etc) to please write to <email@example.com> about it.
