Proposed by: Aly Tharp CONTEXT: The "logo" that we have been using violates the wishes and copyrights of the Red River Unitarian Universalist Church, in Denison, Texas. Aly made the "logo" and takes responsibility for neglecting to acknowledge this copyright. As fate would have it, Aly preached a sermon at Red River recently and spoke to them in person about it. The Board of the church discussed it’s use in the banner of our website (it’s been removed for the time being), and sent the following letter:
RED RIVER UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH 515 NORTH BURNETT AVENUE DENISON, TX 75092

You may use this email as confirmation that the Board of Trustees of Red River Unitarian Universalist Church has granted limited permission for Unitarian Universalist Young Adults for Climate Justice to use our chalice logo. The Board has waived a user fee.
This permission limits the use of our logo as follows:
1. In the masthead of theuuyacj.org web site 2. In printed materials relating to the work of Unitarian Universalist Young Adults for Climate Justice.
This permission has three stipulations:
CREDIT FOR USE:
The following credit must displayed on the home page of your web site and must be appear somewhere in all printed material displaying the logo: “Chalice logo courtesy of Red River Unitarian Universalist Church, Denison, TX. Used by permission.”
ALTERATIONS TO THE LOGO: The logo must remain in its original colors and without any text or images overlaid. It may be resized to meet your printing needs.
COPIES FOR OUR RECORDS: When used in printed materials, three hard copies of the materials that include the logo must be mailed to:
Red River Unitarian Universalist Church PO BOX 1806 Denison, TX 75021 Attn: Board Secretary
If it is helpful, I’m attaching the logo as a .eps file suitable for use in Adobe Illustrator and for professional printing.
We’re pleased that you like and wish to use our logo. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
In common struggle,
Doug Strong Board Secretary Red River Unitarian Universalist Church Denison, TX
CONTEXT Continued: A while back (about a year ago), Aly talked with Cindy Davidson (UUMFE Board; Aly reports to Cindy as her supervisor / Board liaison) about getting money for paying someone to create a logo for UUYACJ, and Cindy said we could spend up to about $250. This was not much acted upon. Curtis connected Aly with one YA artist and there was a small amount of conversation, but nothing came together.
That the UUYACJ send a letter to Red River UU of apology for violating their copyright and gratitude for allowing us to use the river chalice logo. Aly will draft this, and send it to core and active members for editorial review.
That the UUYACJ choose not to put the red river chalice logo symbol back on the web banner but that we don't rule out using it occasionally in compliance with their stipulations listed in their email letter to Aly (meaning we can use it in print publications, with credit to RRUU, and would need to send them a copy of these printed materials).
That the UUYACJ will have a graphic art contest with a popular vote for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place (with a $ award) on our website. A team will establish the requirements for submissions (things like - style, submission mediums, contains the words “Unitarian Universalist Young Adults for Climate Justice” or “UUYACJ” somewhere in it; thematically about climate justice; allow our use, some kind of creative commons license, etc.) and a working plan for the campaign. Aly will check with UUMFE about our current financial resources and what amount could be put towards this effort.
This is a consensus decision-making proposal intended only for young adults age 18-36 years old who are interested-in or already engaging in the UU Young Adults for Climate Justice network (any active member of the network can make a proposal). If you do not meet that description, this form is not for you. Please choose another tab to explore. Thank you!
